Open Storage Appliances from Sun

Sun Microsystems has added three new members to its Storage 7000 family that include Open Source software.

Sun regards introduction of these units as a boon for small and large data capacities alike. For a company used to valuating the wide usage pattern of its products, it justifies its new storage appliances in terms of their cost-beneficial standard components, open source software, easy setup and low energy consumption.

The newcomers Sun Storage 7110, 7210 and 7410 are just the beginning, according to Sun's webpage, and more appliances and software components are to follow.
Sun views the feature-rich appliances as complete packages: unlimited snapshots, recovery, mirroring, replication, RAID-5, RAID-6, compression and thin provisioning are among the features.

The Common Internet File System (CFIS), Network File System (NFS), HTTP/FTP and WebDAV protocols are supported. Software updates are also included.

The smaller of the models, 7110, comes with 2 TBytes storage and costs around $10,000.
